Hand-Tracked VR Cytology Experience

Dechra Veterinary Products wanted a reason for vets to stop at their conference stand. We built a two-minute, hand-tracked VR experience for Meta Quest 3 that teaches how to prepare and read a cytology sample from a dog's ear – and ends with the right Dechra product.

The challenge

Conference delegates are practising vets and vet techs – not gamers, often first-time VR users, standing in a busy, noisy hall and trying it once. The biggest risk was a clumsy first 20 seconds.

The experience also had to be medically accurate to Dechra's own procedure, carry the brand throughout, give the sales team a talking point, and work out of the case on the stand without staff having to step in.

Our approach

We designed around hand tracking only – no controllers – so players pick up swabs, dip slides in stains in the correct order, rinse them under a tap and lean into a microscope with their own hands. A voiceover guides every step, and there is no fail state: every player reaches a reward.

A two-part final quiz asks players to identify the organism and then choose the right Dechra product. Completion times are recorded against a username only, with no personal data, and stored in Firebase with per-location leaderboards that Dechra can filter and reset per event.

The results

Dechra's sales team and one of their vets tested the experience at a sales meeting, and their feedback was built into the release headsets. The client singled out the dog – including the way he shakes his head – and the voiceover.

Two kiosk-configured headsets were delivered for the London Vet Show at ExCeL, Dechra's biggest conference of the year, with new versions landing on the headsets automatically under the maintenance package.
